With the second edition of Album of the Week we take it back to 1989 and Big Daddy Kane's It's a Big Daddy Thing. This was the second studio album from one of the originators of modern hip hop. Big Daddy Kane was one of the first to speed up rhymes and really developed his own unique flow. He is considered by many in the game as one of the best MCs of all time. We was on that same shit, that Big Daddy Kane shit,
where compound syllables sound combined.
Now back to the album, it album starts out with, in my opinion, the best song on the LP "It's A Big Daddy Thing". With a very fast beat, Kane keeps up with it and pretty much destroys the song. All of the songs are a good listen, some with a fast rhyming pattern and and some slower joints, but still brings the heat. The album has been Kane's top selling album to this point, being a certified gold album. Rolling Stone Magazine considers this album a hip hop classic. Another must listen on the album is "Smooth Operator" where Kane raps about how he is a ladies man over a nice slowed down beat that samples an Eric B. & Rakim track. The very end to the song is sampled in Nas' song "I Can". Overall it is a must listen to album, and if you don't really know who Big Daddy Kane is, you will come to like him by the end of it.
