Songs of the Week (Top 15 Songs of August 2011)

I've been slacking on the Songs of the Week posts, being on vacation and shit. Being on a tropical island kind of voids out any type of blog posts that take effort. But don't worry we be back this weekend, with some shit that'll keep you occupied while you wait out the hurricane of death. Although I hope you guys check the site multiple times a day...the truth is many people don't and some real gems slip under the radar and don't get heard or get the credit they deserve.

So I'm starting a new segment on the last weekend of the month I'll make the Songs of the Week post a wrap up of all the best songs that have come out in the past month. Each song has a separate download link, and at the bottom of the post there will be a .zip file that has all 15 songs in one download. Remember, this is MY opinion, although I welcome any input recommendations that didn't make the list. So hit the jump and check out the best songs that have come out in the past 30 ish days.

15. Meek Mill - Work (feat. Rick Ross) [prod. Lex Luger]
Album: Dreamchasers

Meek's been having a huge year so far. The MMG has been running shit and releasing straight bangers all summer. This one was leaked earlier this year, with many different versions surfacing before the Rick Ross featured, tagless version was released on Meek's latest mixtape. Got a stereotypical Lex Luger beat, but nothing like some ignorant shit to get shit started.

14. Celeb Forever - Alive (feat. Curren$y)
Album: Lights

This is the first song I heard from Celeb Forever, and he's kept the good material flowing with his debut mixtape Lights with DJ Dram. He kind has a Drizzy-esque flow on this track, plus a dope verse from Spitta.

13. Lil' Wayne - It's Good (feat. Jadakiss & Drake) [prod. Cool & Dre]
Album: Tha Carter IV

For me at least, CIV was kinda the last straw for Wayne and my book. He's kept the struggle verses trickling out, but nothing that's really impressed me. Much to my surprise tho, his newest album is actually pretty dope and I'm glad he's still got some bangers left in him. This is the only CIV track on the list, but trust me you should definitely give the whole project a listen when it comes out on Monday.

12. Flo Rida - Good Feelin'
Album: Only One Rida (Part 2)

So maybe I'll catch shit for putting this on the list. But I guarantee this will be played in clubs and on the radio everywhere in the near future. The Avicii sampled beat is straight crack and I don't even give 3 shits about what Flo Rida is even saying, I still love the song.

11. Game - Martians vs. Goblins (feat. Tyler, The Creator & Lil' Wayne)
Album: The R.E.D. Album

This Wayne feature is completely useless, but Tyler's verse is fire. I'm not really a huge fan of OFWGKTA but I gotta give him props, kid did his thing on this track.

10. Jay-Z & Kanye West - That's My Bitch [prod. Kanye West & Q-Tip]
Album: Watch The Throne

Obviously, WTT was one of the most anticipated albums of the past few years, and it really did deliver. Ton of good songs on it. This one was one of the few songs that was released before the album was dropped, and I didn't really pay much attention to it. But once I listened to it on the album, I realized how dope it really is.

09. Royce Da 5'9" - Second Place [prod. DJ Premier]
Album: Success Is Certain

With all the WTT and CIV hype going on, Royce's album kinda slipped under the radar. This is unfortunate because Royce showed that he can really support an album by himself, with minimal support from Eminem. Plus some production from the legendary DJ Premier doesn't hurt one bit.

08. Game - The City (feat. Kendrick Lamar) [prod. Cool & Dre]
Album: The R.E.D. Album

My favorite song from Game's album, simply because Kendrick Lamar blacks out on the last verse. Dude is not human smh. I'm still listening to Section.80 constantly.

07. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Niggas In Paris [prod. Hit Boy]
Album: Watch The Throne

You haven't heard this til you bump it on a huge system. This is real luxary rap. Although I hate Will Ferrell, I'm really not mad about the Blades of Glory reference either. Plus the reason why everyone is saying "that shit cray".

06. Celeb Forever - Cook (feat. Styles P)
Album: Lights

The beat on this shit is crazzyyyy. Definitely give this a listen if you missed it when we posted it at the beginning of the month. SP The Ghost goes in.

Download: Celeb Forever - Cook (feat. Styles P)

05. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Lift Off (feat. Beyonce) [prod. Kanye West, Q-Tip & Pharrell]
Album: Watch The Throne

Now a ton of people say how this song is wack, the verses are weak, ect. and that may be true. It might not be the most lyrically of the songs and obviously aimed at the radio, but Beyonce fuckin murks this. She really does make the song. So idc if the verses are like 12 bars each, the song is dope.

04. Crooked I - Fast Car Freestyle
Album: N/A

No one goes in harder (pause) on other peoples' beats then Crooked I. He flips the "Fast Car" struggle anthem by Tracy Chapman, and laces his own story. Dude has lived a hard life, but has made the best of it.

Download: Crooked I - Fast Car

03. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Murder Of Excellence [prod. Swizz Beatz & S1]
Album: Watch The Throne

My favorite song from their project. Some real shit is spoke on this track and the sample for the beat is ill. If you haven't already, you guys gotta cop WTT and give it a listen from front to back.

Download: Jay-Z & Kanye West - Murder Of Excellence [prod. Swizz Beatz & S1]

02. Game - Rough (feat. Yelawolf)
Album: Hood Morning (No Typo): Candy Coronas

I've been telling people since the rough (pun intended) version of this song surfaced, that this was some classic shit, but nobody pays any heed. No one can say Game is wack after listening to this song. It is simply impossible. Game & Yelawolf murder wash this beat. You gotta check it out.

01. Royce Da 5'9" - Legendary (feat. Travis Barker) [prod. Eminem]
Album: Success Is Certain

Whenever I hear a rap artist teaming up with Travis Barker, this is exactly the kind of song I hope for and want to hear. Unfortunately, I'm usually disappointed, but not in this case. This is probably one of my favorite songs of the past few years. Royce shows that he is, in fact, a lyrical machine, despite what you want to believe. And Travis Barker knocks out one of the hardest hitting beats in a while. Just listen.
